ABOUT ESS-2013

A National Conference on Environmental Sustainability and Society: The Growing Paradigm Shift (ESS-2013) during 30-31st March, 2013 was organised by The Department of Civil Engineering, Jaypee University of Engineering & Technology, Guna (MP) with partial financial assistance from Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi. 80 participants from 10 different states of India were participated in the conference.

PAPER PRESENTATIONS

The conference got a wide response on various topics. Research papers were chosen after review by a technical committee. The abstracts are published as souvenir and released during inaugural session. The paper belonged to the following major themes

The conference was inaugurated by Dr. Y. Medury, COO, Jaypee education system. Prof. K.K. Jain, Dean (A) welcomed the guests. Dr. N.P. Shukla, Chairman, MPPCB stressed the importance on environmental sustainability in the present scenario and cited many examples of ‘zero waste’ concept for utilization of industrial waste materials as raw materials in inaugural address as Chief Guest in inaugural function. Prof. I.M. Mishra, IIT-Roorkee talked about environmental engineering and sustainable development and expressed the view that environmental sustainability is extremely important in the present circumstances as guest of honor. The Vice Chancellor, Dr. N.J. Rao mentioned about the activities of university while Dr. R. Subramanyam, Organizing Secretary presented the theme of the conference and Mr. Shiva Shankar proposed the vote of thanks.

There were several technical sessions and the 1st invited lecture was presented by Mr. V.K. Ahirwar of MPPCB on ‘Environmental regulations & Role of PCB’. The other invited lectures were presented by Prof. N.J. Rao, Prof. I.M. Mishra, Prof. K.K. Jain, Prof. N.N. Dutta, Prof. B.K. Mohanty and Mr. S.V. Krishnan. During the six technical sessions followed 31 papers were presented. The details of technical sessions are annexed. The sessions had intense deliberations and brain storming following the presentations. The sessions were chaired by eminent academician and rapporteur provided the necessary support and co-ordination. The important environmental issues such as biogas production from food waste, removal of color/toxic compounds from wastewater by electrocoagulation and adsorption, application of photo-fenton process for wastewater treatment, uses of  plastic waste in road construction, nitrate removing technologies, electro chemical degradation of agri-based industrial waste streams, reclamation of textile dying wastewater by using electrolytic processes and sustainable building materials were discussed with recommendations made for further course of action and undertaking R&D works in these directions.

VALEDICTORY FUNCTION

The valedictory function was held at the end of the conference chaired by Prof N.J. Rao, Vice Chancellor, JUET, Guna with Prof. K.K. Jain, Dean (A), Prof. N.N. Dutta, Chairman of the conference and Dr. Subramanyam, Organizing Secretary, on the Dias.
The Chief Guest Prof. Rao highlighted the success of environmental sustainability conference and distributed certificates to all delegates. Feedbacks were given by delegates on various aspects of the conduct the conference. Mr. D.K. Shukla proposed the vote of thanks. The conference was ended with a national anthem.
