After completing B.E.(Civil) from University of Madras, received Master’s Degree by research in Civil Engineering from IIT, Madras and Ph.D. degree from Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangaluru. Prior to joining JUET, in Jan., 2013, he was working at CSIR-Structural Engineering Research Centre, Chennai, Govt. of India for nearly 30 years and served as a Chief Scientist and Advisor (Management) and Head, Wind Engineering Laboratory. He is a recipient of CSIR-DAAD Scholarship (1987-88) and UNDP Fellowship (1992-93) and carried out research studies in the field of wind engineering at Ruhr University, Bochum, Germany and University of Western Ontario, Canada, Colorado State University, USA and Building Research Establishment, UK. Dr. Arunachalam has contributed to the Indian Standards on Wind Loads, IS 875: Part (3) (1989). He is a recipient (as a team) of CSIR Engineering Technology Shield and A.S. Arya – UoR Disaster Prevention Award (2000) for the contribution towards cyclone disaster mitigation and best Research papers publication (1999-2000 & 2000-2001) at CSIR-SERC. He is one of the Editors of the Journal of Wind and Engineering published by Indian Society for Wind Engineering. He has to his credit 104 research papers published in national and international journals and conferences, and about 130 research and consultancy technical reports.
His areas of specialisation include Wind Engineering and Boundary layer wind tunnel testing, analysis and design of RC structures, and cyclone disaster mitigation. He has served as Member, Expert Sub-Group (cyclone), National Disaster Management Authority, Government of India, and as Vice-President, Indian Society for Wind Engineering (ISWE) (2008-2010), Member, Board of Studies, Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu.. He has guided several PG students and has been an examiner for Post-Graduate and PhD theses from IIT, Chennai, Anna University and Annamalai University. Presently, he serves as Convenor, Special Structures Sectional Committee, CED 38/BIS, Bureau of Indian Standards.
He is a Life Member of Indian Concrete Institute, Indian Association of Structural Engineers and Indian Society for Wind Engineering. He is a Fellow of Institution of Engineers (India) and a Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering. He is also a Member, Editorial Board, International Journal of Construction Materials and Structures (ISSN: 2321-2233), published by the Indian Society for Construction Materials and Structures, Roorkee,Uttarakhand. |
